Featured Customer Success Story
Cal-Maine Foods
Cal-Maine started its shell egg operations as Adams Egg Farm in 1958. In 1963, the enterprise built the world’s largest egg farm in Edwards, Mississippi. Since that time Cal-Maine has grown to 145 facilities with breeder farms, hatcheries, distribution centers, feed mills, shell egg production, pullet growing, processing, packing and egg products. Cal-Maine employs approximately 3600 people.
Cal-Maine is also a leader in industry consolidation. Since 1989, they have completed 22 acquisitions ranging in size from 160 thousand layers to 7.5 million layers. Although the market is sometimes characterized as consolidated, the shell egg production industry remains highly fragmented. According to Egg Industry magazine in its 2020 survey, 66 producers, owning at least 500 thousand layers, owned approximately 99% of total industry layers. The ten largest producers owned approximately 54% of total industry layers compared to 50% in 2015. Cal-Maine believes industry consolidation will continue and plans to capitalize on opportunities as they arise.
THE CHALLENGE
Collecting and managing data is paramount to successful enterprise operations. Keeping that data secure is an ever-evolving process. Cal-Maine uses a plethora of business metrics to check the pulse on all of its operations. Implementing software specifically designed for its business is vital in order for Cal-Maine to fulfill these needs.
THE SOLUTION
Cal-Maine has successfully benefitted from a partnership with Aeros for multiple generations of software functionality over the past 40+ years. Today’s Aeros software environment provides the necessary tools to manage the enterprise from both financial and operations aspects. As Cal-Maine has grown and completed numerous acquisitions over the years, and Aeros has provided an efficient platform to support that kind of integration.
THE IMPACT
In the 1970s, Cal-Maine developed its own software in-house and was limited by staff and the ability to meet its own needs. Aeros—known at that time as Chilson Management Controls—presented Cal-Maine executives its software tools to better manage the enterprise. Moving from stand-alone environments where each location was a silo to a consolidated ERP system has given Cal-Maine the ability to significantly improve its metrics for managing the enterprise.
Cal-Maine and Aeros are long-time partners with a strong trust relationship. Together they have helped each other become stronger and more efficient in the use and development of the software tools necessary to properly manage the animal protein business.
